Letter from the President:
The vintage racing season is fast coming to an end. We at MVVRCA are getting
ready for our big event at Columbus Junction, IA. This will be our 8th annual
meet, since the break-up of the old Midwest Old Timer Club meet that was held
at Davenport, IA (this is not to be confused with the present day Midwest Old
Timers organization). For the last 2 years we have called our event The Hawkeye
Futurity to honor one of the great races held in the United States. It was
one of the first "Nationals" type format held. It drew cars from all over
the US, & some of the best known "Outlaw" racers. This year is the 50th
anniversary of the first Hawkeye Futurity held in June 1955. The first winner
was Jud Larson in the Tom Randol Offy; Jud won in 1956 also. Tom Randol's
son Mark has replicated his car, even though it has some of the original
parts such as the engine, grill, & several other parts, it still has to be
called a replica as not enough of the chassis was left to call it original.
Mark had some of the best people in the restoration business, such as Don
Brown & AJ Watson, help him put the car together, and it makes for one
of the most spectacular vintage cars that you will see. Mark has expressed
an interest in bringing the car to our event as he has great memories of
the Hawkeye Futurity. We will also have at least one other veteran car
that participated in the race; the Gene Cummingham Ranger which first ran
it in 1958. I am going to have a small display of Futurity memorabilia.
If anyone has anything from the race we would appreciate having the use
of it for the display.
It has been a busy racing season; our members have been seen at many
of the events. The year started out at the BCRA event in Lincoln, NE. We
then had our spring warm-up at Donnellson & .Burlington, IA, with a
general meeting & picnic between the two races. Bad weather & other
problems plagued the race part of it, but we did have a good meeting
& a large turnout for the picnic. The following week was the Nostalgia
Night at Knoxville; it was great to see so many of our members at
this great event. We had another single race event at the Louisa
County Fair in Columbus Junction, IA in July. The car count was
very good. The Cedar Rapids race was the following weekend; I was
not able to attend this event because I had engine problems, but
hope that our members did support this great meet.
There are several great events left in the season including our own
on September 16-17-18; look over the schedule to see which one's you
can attend. I hope to see all of you at the Hawkeye Futurity, it promises
to be a great meet with much seat time, great food & bench racing.
See you there!
Pat
