North America Chapter SRCC - Series Results for 2003

ROUND TEN - SVRA Season Finale at VIR, Virginia
October 9-12, 2003

We had a great turnout of cars at VIR with new members Eddie Pendry, Pete McNamara, Jeff Wright, Randall Hancock, joining the series regulars at this event. In all, there were 14 Sports2000 cars in the paddock, and SVRA had provided extra time on Sunday for a Sports2000 only, SRCC Championship Feature Race. It was going to be a super weekend!

The weather on Friday was pretty good, with a bit of an overcast, but no rain. Topping the charts on the Friday morning session was Peter Krause in his Tiga SC-80 at 2:08.6, then Paul Tavilla in his Swift DB-2 at 2:09.3 and Jeffrey Wright in his Swift DB-2 at 2:11 followed by the rest of the cars. David Calafato sheared the drive on his oil pump, and ordered a new pump to be shipped overnight express. Eddie Pendry was fighting a mis-fire.

Friday afternoon results were Peter Krause at 2:07.8, Jeff Wright at 2:08.9, Scott Livingston at 2:09.0, Paul Tavilla at 2:10.0, Lee Chapman at 2:10.8, followed by Roy Sokolowski, Randall Hancock, Bill Stewart, Tom Ash, Pete McNamara, Vaughn Rockney, Eddie Pendry, and John Nelson.

There was a steady rain overnight Friday night, which continued all day on Saturday. It was good rain practice for all, just in case it was raining on Sunday. The Steward of the Meet decided that the times Friday would set the grid for Sunday's Feature race which was expected to be in the dry.

The Saturday qualifying race in the rain was won by Peter Krause, followed by Paul Tavilla, Roy Sokolowski, Pete McNamara, Tom Ash, Randy Kornegay, Vaughn Rockney and Scott Livingston.

The rain stopped early Sunday morning and the paddock was already beginning to dry at dawn. By 10:00 AM the sky was clear and bright, and there was no chance of rain the rest of the day. Everyone had time to mount dry tires and then warm up their cars in the morning warm-ups.

All cars were still running well for the start of the noon Sports2000-only SRCC Championship Feature race. Peter Krause and Jeff Wright were on the front row, and led the cars two-by-two around the track on the pace lap.

There were many lead changes on the first lap, and then Wright led after the third lap, until he spun at exit of Turn 5. Pete McNamara broke an exhaust header and retired. Scott Livingston led after Wright's spin, then broke a right rear top link at Turn 10, and was out. Paul Tavilla lead the last two laps winning SRCC Class B and first overall. Peter Krause won SRCC Class H and was second overall. Bill Pedersen finished 2nd in class H and 3rd overall. Roy Sokolowski, Randall Hancock, David Calafato, Tom Ash, Randy Kornegay had a race-long battle, with Roy coming out on top at the end. Eddie Pendry started the feature with a mis-fire that cleared up at the mid-point of the race and he turned quick laps. Vaughn Rockney and John Nelson were quicker than their qualification times, but still couldn't catch up with Eddie and the rest of the pack. All cars at the Round won Championship points for their drivers. It was a great day!

ROUND NINE - SVRA Blue Gray Races at Summit Point, West Virginia
September 26-28, 2003

We had a good turnout of cars at Summit Point. Peter Gates (Swift DB-2), Peter Krause (Tiga SC80), David Calafato (March 83S), Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B63), Paul Tavilla (Swift DB-2), John Galson (Tiga SC85), and Lee Chapman (Tiga SC80) all ran well through out the weekend and finished well in the Sunday SRCC feature event. The weather was nice all weekend, with the only showers coming Saturday night after the racing was through for the day.

Lee Chapman's Tiga SC80 was ready for action at Summit Point!

Roy Sokolowski discovered a loose valve seat in his engine on Thursday afternoon, and John Galson had a leaking bleed screw on one brake caliper. Both were able to obtain parts late Thursday, and were ready to go on Friday. Peter Gates was quickest in Friday morning practice followed by Paul Tavilla, and Lee Chapman.

Paul Tavilla next to his Swift DB-2. Paul has the series lead in SRCC Class B.

Friday afternoon practice saw Gates again on top, Peter Krause with second fast time, and then Tavilla, Chapman, Sokolowski, Galson and Calafato.

Roy Sokolowski beside the beautiful Chevron B63.

Saturday morning qualifying was uneventful and all the cars got quicker. In the Saturday afternoon qualifying race, Peter Gates led wire-to-wire, with a good battle for second between Paul Tavilla, Lee Chapman, and Peter Krause, and a good battle for fifth between Sokolowski, Calafato, and Galson.

John Galson and his beautiful Tiga SC85!

The DART Racing March 83S of David Calafato ran great all weekend!

Saturday evening, Peter and Freda Gates hosted a party for the SRCC group, with a big spread of food and drinks. The Buffalo wings were hot!

Freda Gates put out a big table of food for the SRCC teams right after the Saturday Qualifying Race and it was much appreciated!

The weather continued good for the Sunday afternoon SRCC feature event. At the start, Lee Chapman went from third to first with Peter Gates tucking in behind him in second, Paul Tavilla right behind in third and Peter Krause in fourth. Roy Sokolowski, John Galson and David Calafato formed another tight bunch right behind.

Chapman and Gates exchanged the lead several times during the first couple laps, with Krause in third. Gates slowly (turning a 1:18.3!) pulled out a four, six and then ten car length lead over Krause who had passed Chapman. Tavilla was next, followed by Sokolowski, Galson and Calafato.

Peter Krause won SRCC Class H in his beautiful Tiga SC80!

Peter gates won SRCC Class B in his Swift DB-2!

Paul Tavilla continues to lead the SRCC series in Class B, with Roy Sokolowski as the only other driver having a mathematical chance for the 2003 SRCC Class B Championship.

John Nelson has already clinched the 2003 SRCC Class H Championship!.

The North America Chapter SRCC series next moves on to the Season Finale at the SVRA Virginia Historic Races at VIR. If you'd like to try out the series, but don't have a car, Lee Chapman Racing, Krause and England Inc., and Motor Racing Services all have cars to rent for the series.

ROUND EIGHT - HSR Atlanta Historics at Road Atlanta, Georgia
September 12-14, 2003

We had a light turnout of cars at Atlanta. Randy Kornegay was the sole SRCC car. He reports that the weather was good all weekend. Because of the small turnout, Randy was grouped with the B.O.S.S. cars, including a F1 car which set the new outright lap record at Road Atlanta.

Randy was allowed to switch groups and ran the weekend with the Sports Challenge cars. Randy's car ran great all weekend, and except for a slow spin in the hairpin in the first practice session, his weekend was uneventful. He won first overall in the Sports Challenge feature on Sunday.

The North America Chapter SRCC series next moves on to the SVRA Blue-Gray races at Summit Point. If you'd like to try out the series, but don't have a car, Lee Chapman Racing, Krause and England Inc., and Motor Racing Services all have cars to rent for the series.

ROUND SEVEN - CFCR Formula Car Festival at BeaveRun, Pennsylvania
August 9-10, 2003

We had a good turnout of cars at BeaveRun. SRCC veterans John Nelson (Tiga SC82), Vaughn Rockney (Lola T492), David Calafato (March 83S) and Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B63), were joined by Lee Chapman (Tiga SC80), who was driving his car for the first time in an SRCC race. The weather was warm, with showers every day!

The SRCC cars are on the false grid for the start of Saturday qualifying. Front to back, Lee Chapman (TigaSC80 S2000), Phil Meany (Aldon F100), Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B63 S2000), Vaughn Rockney (Lola T492 S2000), John Nelson (Tiga SC82 S2000), David Calafato (March 83S S2000), Travis Engen (Chevron FB)

This was a two day event, with an optional $75 test day on Friday and some of the drivers tested on Friday. Saturday began with an optional warm-up, then a practice session, a qualification session and an afternoon race. Lee Chapman was fast qualifier with a 1:02:800, followed by Roy Sokolowski with a 1:04.064, David Calafato with a 1:06.536, and John Nelson and Vaughn Rockney, both with a 1:09.613. The afternoon race started dry, but ended with heavy rain. John Nelson experienced oil pressure problems and was out for the weekend. Roy Sokolowski broke a wheel when a front upright nut failed, but he was able to repair the damage.

Rain was nearby as the SRCC cars formed up for the Sunday feature race. All the SRCC cars started on slicks and the first two laps were dry. Rain began on the west end of the track on lap 3, and moved to the east end of the track by lap 10. The rain ended on lap 15 and by the end of the feature the track was dry and fast. Roy Sokolowski broke a throttle cable on lap 3 and had to pull off. Lee Chapman lapped the field, turning a 1:03.404 in the process. David Calafato won SRCC class B with a fast lap of 1:06.206.

ROUND SIX - VDCA Vintage Races at Birmingham, Alabama
July 25-27, 2003

We had a good turnout of cars at Birmingham. SRCC veterans Paul Tavilla (Krause & England prepared Swift DB2), Scott Livingston (Motor Racing Services prepared March 83S), and John Nelson (PJN Racing Tiga SC82) were joined by four new cars. Peter Krause brought his Krause & England Tiga SC80. Randy Kornegay rented Norm Scott's Royale RP37 for the event. Tom Ash brought his beautiful Tiga SC85, and Charles Livingston drove the Motor Racing Services March 81S. The weather was hot!

Drivers found in the first Friday practice that the track was really tight. Cars with Mosport gearing were hardly using third gear. Drivers gradually learned the track and worked up to speed. John Nelson and Randy Kornegay, both broke their headers in the first practice session, and Tom Ash had clutch problems out on course. Between sessions Norm Scott and Randy Kornegay took both headers to a local racers shop to be repaired. Tom Ash had to sit out the afternoon session as his new clutch was due to arrive the next day. Saturday morning started out overcast and with a light breeze, but it got hot later in the day and stayed hot on Sunday. In the first practice session Scott and Charles Livingston got faster and were being pushed by Paul Tavilla. Tom Ash put in some laps in Peter Krause's Tiga to learn the track. John Nelson had a plug wire come off and pulled in.

Saturday qualifying saw Charles Livingston set fast time, followed by Paul Tavilla, Scott Livingston, Peter Krause, Randy Kornegay, Tom Ash, and John Nelson. Charles and Scott Livingston won the one-hour Enduro with Randy Kornegay and Bill Stewart (his team mate) finishing second overall in Norm Scott's Royale RP-37.

As happened at Sebring and Mosport, it rained just at the first call to the grid for the Sunday SRCC feature race, and it was too late to switch to rain tires. All the SRCC cars started on slicks, and negotiated Turn 1 successfully on the first lap, but then Peter Krause went off-track in Turn 5 loosing fourth place to Randy Kornegay. Peter recovered, and then gradually began passing cars, first passing Randy, then Paul, then Scott, and lastly Charles. As the track dried, Charles began to challenge Peter for the overall lead, but then Charles spun in the stream that crossed the track in the braking zone for Turn 1. It was a great race for all and proof that the qualifying grid doesn't always mean how the finishing order will be decided.

ROUND FIVE - VARAC Vintage Festival at Mosport, Ontario
June 27-29, 2003

We had a good turnout of cars at Mosport, and with seven Sports 2000s in the group, we dominated the race group. Last year's Class B Champion, Scott Livingston, returned, this time in his Class H March 81S. Defending Class H Champion, Tom Coppage was along as crew for Scott. Jamie Bateman, previous Mosport Champion, was there with his Lola T492. Roy Sokolowski, fresh off his victory at Watkins Glen, brought his beautiful Chevron B63. Phyllis Nelson had the PJN racing Tiga SC82 ready for series points leader John Nelson. David Calafato had a new motor in his superquick March 83S. John Galson brought his beautiful Tiga SC85, sporting a new nose and splitter. Vaughn Rockney returned with his Lola T492. There were no new cars at the event.

The weather continued good for Saturday with brief showers now and then. Times for Saturday morning qualifying were: Livingston, 1:33.080; Sokolowski, 1:39.262; Calafato, 1:43.584; Galson, 1:45.787; Bateman, 1:46.486; Nelson, 1:48.153; Rockney 1:49.030. Near the end of the session, the Galson SC85 suffered a connecting rod failure, putting John out for the weekend.

Most times continued to improve Saturday afternoon, with the running order unchanged. Livingston got down to a 1:30:040. Sokolowski a 1:39.995, Calafato a 1:41.522, Bateman a 1:42.856, Nelson a 1:44.830, and Rockney a 1:45.498.

(Photo a frame from the TV Show)

It rained at the start of the Sunday morning warm-up race, and with all cars in the group on slicks, the start was waved off. None of the SRCC cars went out for the restart as there wasn't time to mount rain tires.

It rained fairly hard for a few minutes immediately before the start of the SRCC Sunday feature race, but the rain stopped with 5 minutes before the pace lap. All cars elected to stay with slicks. The track was a bit slippery for the first few laps, but then became dry for the remainder of the race. All cars ran well, and the finishing order was just as every session had been all weekend. Congratulations to Feature Winners Scott Livingston (SRCC Class H) and Roy Sokolowski (SRCC Class B)!

ROUND FOUR - HSR Watkins Glen Historic Races, New York
June 6-8, 2003

New faces and new cars joined the North America SRCC series at Watkins Glen, as Stephen Paoletti drove his Swift DB2 and Roy Sokolowski debuted his Lee Chapman Racing-prepared Pole Position Racing Chevron B63. Veteran drivers John Galson (Tiga SC85) and John Nelson (Tiga SC82), rounded out the four-car entry.

(Phyllis Nelson photo)

The weather was good on Friday, but trouble struck early for the Championship leading car of John Nelson, as the clutch slave cylinder failed in the Tiga SC82 first thing. The Paoletti Swift DB-2 also went out with damage sustained in an off-course excursion. That turned the battle for Class B honors into a shootout between John Galson and Roy Sokolowski.

John Galson (Tiga SC85) and Roy Sokolowski (Chevron B63) ran nose to tail the whole weekend, swapping positions several times.
(Phyllis Nelson photo)

Saturday was damp. The qualifier was a great and very close race. John Galson took the lead into turn one and the racing was very close throughout. John and Roy were side by side several times with each driver having an advantage in different segments. The cars came out of final corner onto the front straight full out, side by side. After 6 laps and 20.22 miles they finished nose to tail, .317 seconds apart in overall time, John Galson first and Roy Sokolowski second. Best time for John was 2:16.773 and for Roy was 2:16.848.

The weather cleared for the Sunday SRCC Feature Race. It was a race-long dice between John and Roy. Roy lead briefly at the start, until John took the inside of turn one, and then went nose to tail until lap 4 when the shift linkage in the Tiga failed in the bus stop. Roy was right under his John's tail at that moment and passed him on the grass coming out. Best race times were 2:15.169 for John and 2:14.318 for Roy. Congratulations to Roy Sokolowski in the Chevron B63 for a SRCC Feature Win in his first time out!

The weather in Wisconsin was good all weekend for the SVRA Johnson Controls Vintage GT Challenge, and was 10 to 15 degrees warmer than last year. The SRCC cars were grouped with the "Wings and Slicks" open-wheel cars including the cars from the BOSS (Big Open-wheel Single Seaters) series.

Friday practice sessions were uneventful as all the SRCC cars ran well, and lap times improved. Dean Tank drove two cars in the group.. the Lola 86/90 S2000 and a March 741 F1, and he alternated between the cars. Don Braaten was quickly up to speed in the Swift DB2.

The weather continued good for the Sunday SRCC Feature Race. Alan Lewis drove the Steve Krinsky prepared Lola T86/90 to first overall and first in SRCC Class B. John Nelson worked the Tiga SC82 up to second overall and first in SRCC Class H. Bob Wismer ran well all weekend, but broke a throttle cable in the Sunday feature, completing enough laps to be awarded second place in SRCC Class B. Don Braaten had mechanical problems at the beginning of the feature race, but picked up starting points.

ROUND TWO - SVRA Spring Fling at Roebling Road, Georgia
April 4-6, 2003

New faces and new cars joined the North America SRCC series at Savannah, as Deane Tank in his Steve Krinsky prepared Lola T86/90 and Bob Browsky in his Andy Greene prepared Royale S2000M made their first starts in the series.

Sebring Champion Paul Tavilla returned in the Krause & England prepared Swift DB-2, as did Bill Pedersen in the very quick Lee Chapman Racing prepared Tiga SC-80 and veteran Allen Childress in his super-nice Royale RP-42A.

The action is hot as the SRCC cars mix it up in turn 1 at Roebling Road!

Deane Tank and Bill Pedersen set fast times in Friday practice and Saturday morning qualifying. Paul Tavilla made spring and gearing changes for Saturday afternoon's race, and Allen Childress began to experience a flattening of engine performance at 6000 RPM on Saturday. Bill Pedersen removed his rear trim tab to try for some more straight line speed.

Deane Tank was on the pole for the Saturday afternoon qualifying race, followed by Bill Pedersen, Paul Tavilla, Bob Browsky and Allen Childress. While Deane led the field, Paul went around Bill, who retired shortly into the race. Bill noted that “taking off the trim tab in the rear resulted in a car that was undrivable." Lap after lap, Deane and Paul battled up front. While Paul was able to post a faster lap at 1:15.451, Deane held him off with a fast lap only a tenth slower. Bob retired early due to overheating and Allen finished third.

Deane Tank was on the pole for the Sunday SRCC Feature Race, followed by Paul Tavilla, Allen Childress (still down on power at 6,000 RPM), Bob Browsky (having cured an air pocket in the cooling system) and Bill Pedersen (with the trim tab back on). The race began as a battle between Paul Tavilla and Deane Tank. Bill Pedersen came up from the back, setting fastest lap in the race, first passing Deane for second and then challenging Paul for the lead. Briefly, Bill got inside Paul in the Carousel, but in the end, it was Paul Tavilla across the line first and first in SRCC Class B. Bill Pederson was second overall and first in SRCC Class H. Bob Browsky and Allen Childress had a fight for fourth which was settled when Allen pitted to check a tire. The SRCC cars had the crowd standing at the fences the whole race!

Paul Tavilla and Bill Pederson now lead the series in Class B and H respectively.

The North America Chapter SRCC series next moves on to the SVRA Johnson Controls GT at Road America in mid-May. If you'd like to try out the series, but don't have a car, Lee Chapman Racing, Krause and England Inc., and Motor Racing Services all have cars to rent for the series.

ROUND ONE - HSR Endurance Challenge at Sebring, Florida
February 27 - March 1, 2003

Round One of the North America Chapter SRCC 2003 series was run at Sebring International Raceway, 28 February through 2 March, 2003. It was the first outing for the Tiga SC80 owned by Lee Chapman, and the Swift DB2 of Paul Tavilla. Phyllis Nelson brought her Tiga SC82 with John Nelson driving and Vaughn Rockney brought his Lola T492s to get the 2003 series off the ground and all four cars ran great all weekend. The weather was sunny and hot all weekend with light showers off and on.

Friday morning practice and Friday afternoon qualifying were uneventful, with all drivers learning the track and their cars, and lap times gradually came down. Simon Hadfield set fast time for the day in Lee Chapman Racing's Tiga SC80.

The Saturday afternoon qualifying race was two races in one. Up front, Paul Tavilla in his Swift DB2 and Bill Pedersen in the Chapman Tiga SC80 had a race-long battle, with the Tiga just nipping the DB2 in a photo finish at the end. Further back, John Nelson made a last lap pass on Vaughn Rockney and John lead to the checker.

There was a brief shower before the Sunday afternoon feature, and the skies to the west were dark with rain as the cars formed up on the false grid. All the drivers chose to go out on dry tires, hoping the rain would hold off. By the time the light showers began again during lap 3 of the feature race, the race order was already determined. Bill Pedersen had broken a throttle cable and was forced to retire early. Paul Tavilla had a big lead up front, and John Nelson was pulling away from Vaughn Rockney. A full course yellow was displayed as a result of cars spinning in the rain, as the rain increased, so did the spread between the S2000 cars. Paul Tavilla won class B and overall, and John Nelson won class H.
